Evaluation and Treatment of Myofunctional Disorders
Oral myofunctional therapy is a specialized treatment that targets the muscles of the mouth and face for both children and adults. Its focus is to ensure that the muscles are functioning correctly for sleeping, eating, and speaking, as well as airway improvement and appropriate facial development. Four main goals:
Establish proper nasal breathing while awake and asleep
Achieve and maintain optimal tongue resting posture
Achieve an adequate lip seal while at rest
Establish and generalize correct chewing and swallowing patterns
Oral Function Therapy
Responsive Feeding Therapy
Does your little one struggle with feeding?
Has he recently had a tongue tie release and needs help organizing his swallow?
Is she having trouble transitioning to solids?
Is he avoiding certain foods based on taste, texture, or temperature? Through the responsive feeding approach, feeding skills and family mealtimes can improve! Together we can come up with a plan to be sure your child is on the right track!
Speech and Language
Wondering if your child’s speech and language skills are on track? Let’s take a look at expressive and receptive language and address any areas of concerns now, rather than later.
Sometimes “wait and see” is bad advice.
Nasal Breathing Education and Training
The Buteyko breathing method is key to educating our clients about the benefits of nasal breathing, and to positively impact wellness though this approach. Nasal breathing allows air to be filtered, humidified, and warmed before entering our lungs. The benefits also include inhalation of nitric oxide, produced in the nasal cavity, which helps with oxygenation and has anti-fungal, anti-microbial, and anti-bacterial properties.
Oral Habit Elimination
While thumb sucking or pacifier use can be a comfort to a child, it can also impact the child’s facial growth and development by contributing to a high, vaulted palate and encouraging an atypical oral resting posture.
Thumb or finger sucking, pacifier use, nail biting, lip or tongue sucking or chewing can all be eliminated through our specialized program.
Gillespie Approach-Craniosacral Fascial Therapy
Foundations and Infant Training
The Gillespie Approach - Craniosacral Fascial Therapy is a hands-on modality that facilitates healing through a freely moving brain, spinal cord, and fascial web. Discovered by Dr. Barry Gillespie it is a non-invasive therapy that can be effective for babies, children, teens, and adults. Treatment offered by Smart Mouth Therapy is limited to the scope of practice for an ASHA certified speech language pathology professional including but not limited to treatment of oral restrictions, TBI, voice, and swallowing disorders.
If you are interested in Gillespie Approach treatment in a broader context, please contact Debbie Uhl, LMT, at (216) 200-6448 or info@debbieuhllmt.com. She offers services at her studio in Solon, Ohio, and is able to treat infants, children, and adults using this modality.
Each client is unique.
And so is your therapy journey. Successful orofacial myofunctional therapy or feeding/oral placement therapy often requires a team approach: dentists, orthodontists, lactation consultants, clinicians, body work professionals, ENTs, sleep medicine doctors, allergists may need to be on your team as well.
Whatever your myofunctional concerns, we will work together to set your goals. Communication is important, and my recommendations will be clear and specific. Results vary based on goals and needs, motivation and participation in therapy. Some clients experience good outcomes within 3 months while others require 12 months or longer.
Smart Mouth Therapy is a private pay practice, and is considered out of network for all insurance plans. Payment is due at time of service.
