Welcome to Smart Mouth Therapy.
I’m Laura, a speech pathologist and oral function geek. I specialize in oral dysfunction, including oral myofunctional disorders, and I use the breadth of my degree, training, and experience to evaluate and treat my clients. I’m licensed in the State of Ohio and hold a Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA, the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.
I am a graduate of the University of Dayton and Kent State University. I attended graduate school at the University of Akron where I earned my MA in Speech-Language Pathology. I have been a speech language pathologist for over 12 years, working in acute care and rehab hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and schools. As a medical SLP, I was blessed work alongside talented clinicians in a rehabilitation setting, diagnosing and treating patients with swallowing issues due to stroke or other causes. It was especially gratifying to help individuals work to regain swallow function and enjoy their favorite foods again!
So when a family member had trouble swallowing, I looked for the cause, only to learn that it was due to an oral myofunctional disorder. This was not covered in graduate school! And so continued my focus on the functions of the mouth, in a new way, through a different lens. I have since received more training in pediatric feeding to better serve clients with feeding concerns.
Training includes: IAOM, AOMT, Simon Says, the Buteyko Clinic, Beckman Oral Motor, Ages and Stages, Babble and Munch, GOMAP, AEIOU Approach to Pediatric Feeding, Walt Fritz Manual Therapy for Voice and Swallowing, Gillespie Approach-Craniosacral Fascial Therapy Foundations Training and Infant Training.
In collaboration with pediatric dentists, lactation consultants, orthodontists, pediatricians, ENTs, bodywork professionals, and sleep medicine physicians, I bring a unique approach to helping my clients of any age. Smart Mouth Therapy was launched to bring the benefits of oral myofunctional therapy, feeding therapy, and craniosacral fascial therapy to others. Let’s see how they can help you!
